Recycled Plastic Bottle Boat

A vessel made entirely of plastic bottles has docked in Sydney after a four month voyage from San Francisco. The crew onboard "Plastiki" is spreading the message that plastic is destroying our oceans. The recycled catamaran is made from nearly 13,000 recycled plastic bottles and held together by glue made from cashew nuts and sugar. The crew set off from San Francisco in March for an 8,000 nautical mile voyage.

The arrival was extra special for crew member Vern Moen who met his new baby, born while he was at sea. "It was very, very surreal to get off at the dock and it's like here's your kid," Moen said. There are about 13,000 pieces of plastic floating in every square mile of the ocean and the toxins are filtering into the food chain. The "Plastiki" will be on display on for the next month at the National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbor. (Dylan Malfa -Channel 2 News)
