Cattle feed from cashew apples

After several studies on the ways to churn out bio-fuel from its juice, cashew apples are now being considered for producing cattle feed. If things pan out well, several thousand tonnes of cashew apples that are now being dumped as waste, will go into the making of cattle feed. An ambitious project is being mooted by the Plantation Corporation of Kerala (PCK) Limited with the support of Kerala Feeds. Presently, the project is under the consideration of the Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences under the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). It is a two-year project and it would be funded by the Board if it gets sanctioned.
To go by the envisaged project, the cashew apple pomace (the residue left after the extraction of juice) would be dried and processed into an ingredient for making cattle feed. "When we get one kg of cashew nuts, around 10 kg of cashew apple will go as waste. The total area of cashew plantations of PCK is around 5,000 hectares and the productivity is 700 kg per hectare. The figures show that a massive quantity of cashew apple is simply wasted every year,’’ according to Devapalan, PCK General Manager (Operations). The processing of cashew apples would not bring in much financial burden, the PCK officials expect.
"Only nominal expense is required for the collection of cashew apples. It will be a huge success once the production of bio-fuel from the juice will also become economical,’’ the official said.
Cashew apple, which is highly nutritious, is put to little use in the country other than in Goa where it is fermented to an alcoholic beverage called Feni. (Express Buzz)
