NCPB fails to heed directive on cashew nuts

The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) of Kenia has failed to heed a government directive to buy cashew nuts from farmers, leaving them at the mercy of middlemen and private processors as the harvest season approaches. As a result, cashew nut processors are preparing to move to Coast province to buy the nuts.
There are four leading processors focusing on the region. They include Millenium Nut, Wonder Nut, Equatorial Nuts Processors (ENP) and Kenya Nuts. Kenya Nuts and ENP are located in Central province, whereas the other two have established processing units in Coast province.
Some farmers have started selling their nuts to middlemen who will stock them and sale them later to processors at a higher fee.
