Kenya bans export of raw cashew nuts

Kenya's Agriculture Minister, William Ruto, has banned the export of raw cashew nuts in a bid to revive the industry. He said the government will also set up a mechanism for stakeholders to regulate prices for raw cashew nuts. Addressing a press conference on Thursday, the Minister said he will establish a regulatory body for the development of cashew nut industry to be known as Kenya Cashew Nut Development Authority (KECADA). He lauded a task force formed in April this year to look into modalities of reviving the cashew nut industry for coming up with a credible report that made several recommendations on ways to revive and revamp the cashew nut industry in the country. Ruto added that Kenya had over two million cashew nut trees occupying approximately 30,000 hectares. The country had the potential to produce over 63,000 metric tones of cashew nuts valued at for over one billion shillings per year if the crop received proper husbandry.
